Soil is a non-renewable natural resource that must be maintained and protected as part of the environment. Soil filters and stores water as groundwater, so it is crucial to keep the soil clean. Groundwater is a vital part of the water supply system, particularly in Finland. Hazardous substances and waste processing can contaminate soil and groundwater. Contamination can occur due to an individual incident or emissions released over an extended period of time. In most cases, the soil or groundwater was contaminated decades ago, but contamination is only detected once a change in land use is planned.
However, there are effective and reliable remediation solutions available for contaminated soil and groundwater. In situ treatment refers to the remediation of contaminated soil or groundwater without removing soil material. Depending on the site, biological, chemical, physical, and/or thermic methods that aim at removing hazardous substances are also available. Suomen Erityisjäte has patented equipment at its disposal to safely and cost-effectively treat contaminated soil and groundwater.
Remediation: In situ treatment of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents, specifically chlorophenol compounds.
Description: Aerobic bioremediation of chlorophenol compounds in the soil and groundwater at the site. Groundwater is pumped into a treatment container where its oxygen level is increased to a high level before the water is returned to the soil. High oxygen levels boost the biological breakdown of chlorophenols.
Remediation: Remediation of a water system contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons through oil separation and activated carbon filtration.
Description: Contaminated water is remediated by pumping it through an oil separator and activated carbon filter. Residual hydrocarbon levels are monitored online as part of the remediation process.
Remediation: Remediation of landfill leachate contaminated with arsenic and dissolved organic hazardous substances.
Description: The leachate at a former landfill site is filtered through an activated carbon and arsenic removal medium to remove the hazardous substances. The treated water is discharged back into the environment.
Remediation: Removal of solid matter and PAH compounds from stormwater through coagulation and activated carbon filtration.
